Workshop of "Prediction & Monitoring of Flash Flood Events by Weather Radar Systems"
The "6th Gematronik Workshop "Prediction & Monitoring of Flash Flood Events by Weather Radar Systems" was held at the factory of SELEX-Gematronik in Neuss (16th to 18th October 2007) by Prof. C. Collier, UK, Prof. W. Krajewski, USA and Prof. E. Todini, Italy.
As the years before, many participants from all continents have met at the 6th SELEX-Gematronik workshop, but this year the topic was of such current interest that more than 70 hydrologists, meteorologists, forecasters and radar specialists decided to listen
- to Prof. Chris Collier, TIES University of Salford, UK with his newest report of: "Flash Flood forecasting: What are the limits of predictability?" (abstract available)
- to Prof. Witold Krajewski, University of Iowa, USA with his report of: "Focus on the uncertainty quantification of radar-rainfall estimation" (abstract available)
- and to Prof. Ezio Todini, University of Pisa, Italy with his report of: "Integrating Radar and telemetering rain gauges in operational flash flood forecasting systems: an example of the Reno River". (abstract available)

All lecturers did a great job of covering the wide variety of this topic in the limited period of time. Thank you again to you all!
The special program topic, mentioned by all participants -as a highlight- was the practical excurse and field experiment with the SELEX-Gematronik new mobile dual polarization radar system METEOR 50DX. The field test included the operational set-up of the mobile system, the measurement of data and the data evaluation.
A balloon ascend including radiosonde sounding was set up by our new co-operation partner Graw GmbH & Ko KG. This opportunity was taken by all participants with great interest.
The radiosondes are displayed in Rainbow® and integrated in Rainbow® algorithms to improve the results.
The new Rainbow® "Radiosonde" Product allows the tracking and display of a radiosonde launch within radar observation volume.
At the end of the workshop, all participants as well as the speakers came a way expressing their belief in the success of this highly sophisticated event.
To all Participants:
We thank you very much for your participation and for your endearing feedback letters!
