SELEX-Gematronik at WMO Africa Training Workshop on Nowcasting
From 28th of November - 09th of December 2005, SELEX-Gematronik participated in the Third WMO Training Workshop on Nowcasting, held under the direction and at the premises of the South African Weather Service in Pretoria, South Africa.
The workshop continued a series of nowcasting workshops undertaken by the World Meteorological Organization's World Weather Watch Research Program in Australia (2000) and Brazil (2003). As already in Brazil in 2003, SELEX-Gematronik again acted in this recent "WMO Africa Training Workshop on Nowcasting" as exclusive sponsor from the weather radar manufacturing sector.
Trainers from leading weather services and research institutions, such as the Bureau of Meteorology (Australia), Meteorological Service (Canada), South African Weather Service (South Africa), Met Office (UK), NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (USA), NCAR - National Center for Atmospheric Research (USA), NSSL - National Severe Storm Laboratory (USA), and SELEX-Gematronik (Germany) had been invited to present their latest results and share their experience with 25 workshop participants from 22 African countries.
Topics as weather radar technology, application, algorithms, interpretation and now-casting were covered by a wide range of presentations. Additionally, lab exercises and case studies helped the participants to study the extensive workshop material in depth.
