Selex Sistemi Integrati GmbH Leads Meteorological Package in SESAR
Selex SI GmbH has been selected to lead the only pure meteorological related working package within the SESAR programme. Selex SI GmbH has become a member of SESAR Joint Undertaking (SJU) following the award of a multi million Euro funding from SJU.
(See also Selex Sistemi Integrati GmbH Joins SESAR Joint Undertaking).
Within the programme, SELEX SI GmbH is responsible for
- Weather sensing technologies specification: This work package includes the assessment of existing ground weather sensors and the review of state-of-the-art technologies. Technological weaknesses are identified and new or enhanced sensor technologies and their combinations are viewed and assessed.
- Weather infrastructure requirements study: This work package identifies relevant types of weather hazards and their impact on aviation. Aim of the study is to understand and to identify the requirements for a comprehensive airport weather sensor infrastructure as well as to quantify the extension of existing airport sensor networks in order to achieve an optimum in identifying severe weather or weather related phenomena in general, aligned with SESAR requirements.
- Ground weather monitoring system: Different weather sensors are used in order to monitor the Control Terminal Area. Each particular weather sensor has different characteristics in terms of e.g. detection capabilities, spatial resolution and coverage or sample interval. Aim is to combine all sensors (resp. sensor data) in such a way that a robust and reliable weather information and forecast will be produced – valid for all weather conditions. This aim will be achieved using an integrated and robust sensor fusion concept combining all pre-processed single sensor data into a comprehensive entity.
